Millions of Assets and Data from Thirty Different Systems Visualized and Analyzed To Improve Grid Reliability

Space-Time Insight, the leading provider of nextgeneration situational intelligence solutions, today announced that Hydro One Networks has deployed Space-Time Insight’s geospatial and visual analytics software to improve the health and reliability of their transmission and distribution assets. The situational intelligence system is being implemented in conjunction with Accenture (NYSE: ACN), a global management consulting, technology services and outsourcing company, which is providing technology consulting and systems integration services to Hydro One.

Space-Time Insight’s software makes it easier for asset managers and executives to determine the transmission and distribution assets at greatest risk of failure, with the goals of improving service reliability, lowering costs and reducing exposure to liability and safety issues. The system provides a consistent, comprehensive view of asset risks and priorities, helping operators and field crews collaborate on scheduled maintenance, refurbishment planning, and strategic asset lifecycle decisions that improve grid reliability.

Hydro One Networks is involved in the planning, construction, operation, and maintenance of transmission and distribution networks in Ontario. Hydro One Networks’ transmission system carries electricity from generating stations to local distribution companies and large industrial customers through a high-voltage network of transformer stations, transmission towers and wires. The company owns 97% of the transmission network in Ontario and operates 26 interconnections with neighboring provinces and states.

“We are excited to be working with Space-Time Insight and Accenture on this project,” said Wayne Smith, SVP, Planning and Operating of Hydro One Networks. “The situational intelligence system gives our asset managers unique insights into our asset portfolio, helps them plan more effectively, and ensures greater reliability of the service we deliver to our customers.”

The Space-Time Insight solution integrates data and functionality from many different systems including SAP ECC, GIS, and real-time data to provide a complete view of Hydro One’s assets. The intelligence generated from measuring the risk factors associated with field assets will result in improved grid reliability, capacity, productivity, and overall organizational efficiency. For example, the system could reduce the number of field service trips through proactive assessment of an asset’s condition.

Brian A. Martin, a managing director in Accenture’s Utilities industry group, said, “Accenture is committed to helping Hydro One optimise its assets and working with the utility and Space-Time Insight to enhance Hydro One’s asset analytics capabilities.”

“Hydro One’s vision for the health and administration of the smart grid across their organization further demonstrates the role and importance of situational intelligence in the management of critical infrastructure,” said Steve Ehrlich, SVP, Marketing of Space-Time Insight.  “We are pleased to be working with Accenture on this project and look forward to jointly executing on that vision.”

The Odyssey of the Topographical Survey of India

In the mid-1990s, geospatial technology developers, solution providers and vendors came together in India to provide a much needed impetus to the geospatial industry. But a similar initiative for topographical surveying and mapping is needed. Surveying and mapping forms the basis of all geospatial analysis and it is important to convene a forum on the most current tools and technology. This article provides information on the history of surveying in India...
