-This application provides a visual guide to understanding the daily sequence of events that took place during a critical 1862 Civil War Battle. It is a must-have app for Civil War enthusiasts.

In September, on the 150th anniversary of the battle, the Antietam Battle app became available on iTunes as a free download for consumers. The first in a series of Civil War titles to be released by Equator Maps, it is based on work created for the Catoctin Center for Regional Studies at Frederick Community College with help from expert historians at the National Park Service.

The eight chapters of this application provide a rich understanding of the battle. The initial chapters show the context of the battle in the Potomac region as Confederate General Robert E. Lee and his troops moved from Virginia into Maryland. The Union troops under the command of General George McClellan followed Lee westward from Washington to the small Maryland town of Sharpsburg on Antietam Creek.

Other chapters show how important regional town centers such as Harpers Ferry, WV and Frederick, MD played a role. And how the terrain around the town of Sharpsburg, MD affected the course of the battle.

The app features:

·         Eight stages of the battle

·         Animated troop movements

·         Audio descriptions enhance easy learning

·         Detailed base maps show 1860’s period terrain and geography

·         Post-battle troop movements are included

The Antietam Battle Map app will provide a clear and concise account of this Civil War battle.
