Tempe, Ariz., April 13, 2010 – Aerials Express, a leading international provider of high-resolution digital imagery, announced today another successful project within its emergency response program capturing aerial imagery of the Station Fire mudslide aftermath for the Los Angeles Regional Imagery Acquisition Consortium (LAR-IAC). The high resolution imagery acquisition and processing offered a concise perspective of the localized devastation along with active recovery efforts assisting county officials in post-event assessment and planning for the impacted areas.

Aerials Express dispatched flight teams to the San Gabriel Mountain foothills shortly after devastating mudslides in the foothill communities of La Cañada Flintridge, La Crescenta, and the City of Los Angeles. Drainage systems were quickly overwhelmed as heavy storms displaced massive amounts of soil and rock made vulnerable by the recent Station Fire. The precision digital cameras captured damaged homes, crushed vehicles, toppled trees, and backyard pools stained brown. The imagery also caught excavation teams already at work removing tons of debris from streets, clearing impacted debris basins, and clogged streets. The imagery was transferred directly to Aerials Express headquarters in Tempe, Arizona for processing and then forwarded to Los Angeles County Geographic Information Office for integration into their GIS infrastructure and distribution to the impacted cities.

“Aerials Express was able to provide this valuable imagery rapidly and cost-effectively. The County and our imagery consortium members will use the collected imagery as a resource for damage assessment, risk mitigation, and communicating our clean-up and response efforts to the public. Getting these high-quality images so quickly after the floods will help us support the people that were impacted more effectively,” conveyed Mark Greninger, Geographic Information Officer for Los Angeles County.

Aerials Express uses its far reaching network of nationwide imagery acquisition services to ensure efficient response times to events across North America. The rapid response program was initiated following destructive landfall of Hurricane Ike on Houston and Galveston, Texas in 2008. Aerials Express has continued to develop its program which has spanned from political event planning to incidents on the United States-Mexico border. Along the way, Aerials Express has honed its acquisition and delivery methods to meet the increasing demand for immediate high resolution imagery coverage.

“We use the latest aerial collection and ortho-processing technologies to provide our rapid response clients with a quick turn-around at a resolution that commercial satellite providers cannot offer.” explained Luke Pritchard, General Manager of Aerials Express.

Aerials Express also maintains an extensive archive of nationwide aerial imagery that can be utilized for impact assessment. Having pre-event and post-event imagery on hand allows clients to quickly analyze how the event has changed an environment; whether it be a particular structure or a large-scale topographic feature. Historical stereo content is also available giving engineering firms a means of developing 3D modeling for change assessment applications.

Aerials Express rapid acquisition and processing services are available to a variety of consumers including civil agencies, insurance, asset management, emergency management, real estate, environmental, transportation, and resource development service firms. Easy to use imagery viewing and mapping software DataDoors Desktop™ is also provided along with the imagery, enabling customers of all skill levels to smoothly incorporate imagery products into their planning and response processes.
