Pictometry Imagery and Analytic Tools Bring Field to the Desktop to Improve Right-of-Way Management

Pictometry International Corp. -- the leading provider of measurable aerial oblique imagery -- has completed a program to capture approximately 2,800 linear miles of transmission corridor in high resolution 3-inch aerial oblique imagery for Alabama Power.

As a result, Pictometry imagery is now available to the leading utility provider for on-demand access and analysis by operations and maintenance personnel using Pictometry's web-based Pictometry® Online analytic tool. The imagery is being used for a variety of field service applications including right-of-way encroachment management.

"Pictometry is consistently proving to have an innovative and cost-effective solution for Utilities companies that provides them with a comprehensive right-of-way management tool for their transmission and distribution networks," said Kevin Reilley, President of Pictometry Business Solutions. "Our innovative image-based tools enable utility teams to access and view imagery quickly, easily and securely online. These users can also view before and after images of locations to identify damage and structural changes. By planning and prioritizing field work from the desktop, they can reduce costs and deploy field resources more effectively."

Pictometry imagery is captured using a patented process which produces the highest quality aerial oblique and orthogonal imagery in the world. Pictometry imagery is high resolution aerial imagery that is geo-referenced to enable accurate measurement of locations and structures as well as area, distance, height, elevation and more -- directly on imagery.

Alabama Power is a subsidiary of Southern Company, one of the largest electric utilities in the United States. Together, Alabama Power, Georgia Power, Gulf Power and Mississippi Power have more than 27,000 miles of transmission line and serve more than 4.4 million customers.

Pictometry delivers image-based infrastructure asset management tools to enterprises in Electric Utilities, Oil & Gas Pipeline, Telecommunications and Transportation which are delivered through Pictometry's web-based analytic tools, integrations as well as integrations with leading CAD and GIS system providers. Towards a Global Licensing Framework for Geospatial Data

Is it time for a global licensing framework for geospatial data? The GSDI Legal and Economic Working group thinks so and offered a presentation and a way forward at the GSDI 13 conference held in Quebec City in May. The effort aims to harmonize existing licensing without changing fundamental access policies and funding models and be compatible with the diferences in national legal systems. That's a tall order, but an important one as the world moves toward geodata sharing. Geoff Zeiss reports.
