Pictometry Signs 10-Year International Deal With Blom ASA

Wednesday, September 28th 2005

Companies Will Also Establish Separate European Pictometry Company

ROCHESTER, NY - Pictometry International Corp., the worldwide leader in digital, aerial oblique imagery and measuring software, announced today that it has signed an agreement with Blom ASA (Norway) that will license the company's technology to Blom for ten years with the option to renew.

The agreement grants Blom the ability to use Pictometry's patented imaging technology to digitally photograph 13 countries in Europe.Pictometry will be helping Blom to establish a separate corporate structure under Blom with the name Pictometry Europe. This entity will create appropriate sales distribution channels for the aerial imaging technology.

Pictometry's industry leading software enables users to easily access up to 12 different oblique (at an angle) views of any property, building, highway, or other feature in an area. The software also enables users to obtain measurements such as distance, height, elevation, and area directly from the oblique imagery as well as insert GIS content and other data.

Blom ASA Chief Operating Officer (COO) David Critchley comments that Pictometry was selected for a number reasons."We saw the emergence of oblique imaging systems and knew we needed to head into this market. Our due diligence in reviewing which oblique imaging provider was best suited to meet our needs as well as the needs of our customers led us to Pictometry," said Critchley."The major distinction between Pictometry and all other international providers of oblique measuring and imaging systems is that Pictometry is clearly the superior product on the market. They have the most sophisticated data capture and processing system that provides the customer with a fast, efficient, and fully tailored product.Having the ability to quickly mobilize from initial image capture through final product delivery is vital to our customers. They know that Pictometry's products can not only meet their deadlines, but also deliver a very high-quality product."

Dirk Blaauw, CEO for Blom, says that the Pictometry agreement provides Blom with a long-term solution for oblique imagery products and services."For us, the choice was an easy one. While other systems may not charge a license fee, Pictometry offers us a proven method that delivers the top-of-the line oblique imaging product to our customers while helping us achieve additional revenues. This gives us peace of mind in knowing that we have selected an established technology from a company that is providing both innovative solutions for today, while better positioning our company's product strategy for future growth opportunities," said Blaauw.

"We are very excited about this agreement with Blom," said Pictometry Chief Marketing Officer Dante Pennacchia."This agreement firmly establishes the Pictometry brand in Europe and is a major step toward our vision of becoming a global enterprise."

Towards a Global Licensing Framework for Geospatial Data

Is it time for a global licensing framework for geospatial data? The GSDI Legal and Economic Working group thinks so and offered a presentation and a way forward at the GSDI 13 conference held in Quebec City in May. The effort aims to harmonize existing licensing without changing fundamental access policies and funding models and be compatible with the diferences in national legal systems. That's a tall order, but an important one as the world moves toward geodata sharing. Geoff Zeiss reports.
