Colorado Springs,CO--Leveraging over 140 years in business, The Sanborn Map Company has added a new dimension to their vast library of digital data by assembling nearly 100 cities of three dimensional building models for both international and domestic locations.

The product, "Sanborn 3D Cities" focused Sanborn’s fleet of aircraft and sensors as well as its satellite partners on Central Business Districts (CBD) of nearly one hundred cities, including; Manhattan, Chicago, Seattle, Vancouver, Rio de Janeiro. The collection and technical resources enabled Sanborn’s photogrammetric engineers to collect and produce highly accurate and precise 3D geometries; creating buildings, terrain models, and orthophoto products.

In total, Sanborn has over 500,000 buildings in its archive today with plans to expand, update, and collect new cities on a continual basis. The product offers enhanced building attribute information for 40 of the cities that are currently available in Sanborn’s flagship product, CitySets™. Sanborn offers 3D Cities for discovery and use by consumers and professionals searchable through the web. The product is consumed by a wide variety of users such as architectural and engineering firms, local government, in personal navigation devices as well as for several risk analysis applications. Sanborn has supported film animations, TV shows, as well as current gaming systems with the 3D Cities product.

Towards a Global Licensing Framework for Geospatial Data

Is it time for a global licensing framework for geospatial data? The GSDI Legal and Economic Working group thinks so and offered a presentation and a way forward at the GSDI 13 conference held in Quebec City in May. The effort aims to harmonize existing licensing without changing fundamental access policies and funding models and be compatible with the diferences in national legal systems. That's a tall order, but an important one as the world moves toward geodata sharing. Geoff Zeiss reports.
