Calgary, A.B. - Hot on the heels of the Open Geospatial Consortium (OGC) officially adopting the SensorThings API standard, SensorUp is proud to provide the first officially recognized reference implementation.

The standard proper is purpose-built for the Internet of Things (IoT). It is designed to connect the diverse devices that make up the IoT, and combine the information in a single platform, making it possible for devices to “talk” to each other. SensorUp has created a certified reference implementation of the standard. This means that IoT application developers and sensor manufacturers can immediately begin using an OGC-compliant IoT platform. They can now get started much sooner, without the years of development and testing necessary to perfect the implementation.

SensorUp provides the official OGC reference implementation for the SensorThings API. The implementation is complete, compliant, and ready-to-use. It can be adopted as either a cloud hosted or on-premise installation. SensorUp’s implementation of SensorThings API comes directly from the experts who created the standard and know it best: SensorUp’s founder and CEO, Dr. Steve Liang, is the editor of the standard and chair of the OGC’s SensorThings Standard Working Group (SWG).

The reason this is so important, is that when devices and applications can talk to each other, we begin to create a truly powerful IoT “system of systems”. Dr. Steve Liang, editor of the standard, explains how this works:

“This standard addresses the issue of scattered, isolated IoT silos: When using the standard, applications and devices can “talk” to each other. This is because the interface protocol and data model are both known, meaning that devices know how to access each other (like knowing how to phone a friend), and know how to speak to each other (like speaking the same language).”
