Hugoton, Kansas will be site of first-ever commercial-scale biomass refinery

– Telvent GIT, S.A., a leading real-time IT solutions and information provider for a sustainable world, announced today that it has been selected to design, manufacture and program a distributed control system for Hugoton, Kan., second generation biomass plant, the first commercial-scale cellulosic biomass refinery in the world

Using Telvent solutions will allow operators to control and supervise all plant processes and respond to current operating conditions. As the first ever commercial-scale cellulosic biomass plant, advanced simulation and technical support will also be provided to develop the programming model and estimate the behavior of the facility under various scenarios, maximizing efficiency and allowing operators to optimize new operating procedures and identify responses to potential issues in advance.

Instead of corn or sugar cane, the plant will use cellulosic biomass or plantfiber to produce bioethanol. The project represents a significant step forward in sustainability as the first facility capable of producing bioethanol from non-food products on a commercial scale.

According to Telvent's Chairman and CEO, Ignacio Gonzalez, “Telvent’s best-in-class services and solutions continue to help our customers implement the world’s most complex and demanding technologies. Working on projects like this biomass plant furthers our commitment to the development of renewable energy sources.”

Telvent’s extensive experience in the European bioenergy field made it the ideal partner for this Hugoton project. Telvent is a leader in developing and implementing solutions for the operation of advanced renewable energy facilities.
