Celebrating the nation’s best geography educators of 2016

WASHINGTON DC – For over 100 years the National Council for Geographic Education (NCGE) has worked to enhance the status and quality of geography teaching and learning at all levels of instruction.  Through its annual awards program, NCGE recognizes excellence in geography teaching, mentoring, research, instructional design and service. 

The National Council for Geographic Education is pleased to announce the following award winners for 2016:

GEORGE J. MILLER AWARD: 

Our highest award for lifetime service to geography education goes to: 

CHARLES FITZPATRICK – Esri, Redlands, CA

 

DISTINGUISHED MENTOR AWARD:

This award for mentoring future geographers and geography educators goes to:

LAURENCE W. CARSTENSEN – Virginia Tech, Blacksburg, VA

 

OUTSTANDING SUPPORT FOR GEOGRAPHIC EDUCATION AWARD: 

This award for outstanding contributions to geographic education outside the formal classroom goes to:

E. WILLARD AND RUBY S. MILLER GRANT FOR RESEARCH IN GEOGRAPHIC EDUCATION:

Award recipients will be honored during a ceremony held at the 2016 National Conference on Geography Education presented by the National Council for Geographic Education. The 2016 National Conference on Geography Education will be held July 28 – 31, 2016 at the Tampa Marriott Waterside Hotel & Marina in Tampa, Florida. The awards ceremony will take place on Saturday July 30th at 6:00 PM EST.
