A new case study details how the City of Brampton, Ontario provides services and promotes interaction with city residents, through an innovative application built by the city with Visual Fusion software from IDV Solutions.

The application—completed by a single Brampton programmer in just three months—visualizes the City's data over Bing Maps, providing users with a visual, interactive interface for accessing everything from public meeting schedules and road closures to available vacant land parcels.

The software has increased usability of the city's Citizens Service Portal and garnered positive feedback for Brampton, a fast-growing city located 20 miles northwest of Toronto. The new interface serves residents, visitors, and new or prospective business owners with quick access to relevant information.

"Citizens – especially an emerging demographic group of young, mobile information workers – expect the same level of customer service that they get in the private commercial sector," said Brampton's chief information officer Rob Meikle.

The application integrates databases, web feeds, and a vast store of geographic information previously confined to the city's GIS department. It has simplified workflow by allowing employees in each department to upload data to the map without the help of the GIS department, thereby making the most up-to-date information readily available. The result is increased transparency and better service to residents.
