WHERE Makes Local Discovery Social with Perfect Places

Tuesday, February 22nd 2011

New Feature Reduces Plan-Making Headaches, Helps Friends Discover Great Places to Go Together

WHERE, Inc. today unveiled Perfect Places, a new and fun way for friends to find great places to go together. This new feature recommends nearby places for users to go by matching relevant similarities in their tastes. Perfect Places is powered by WHERE’s proprietary recommendation engine, already trusted by over 4 million WHERE users to help them discover their next favorite place. With the addition of Perfect Places, WHERE brings a genuinely social experience to local discovery and encourages people to connect with friends in the real world.

“WHERE is shaping the future of local discovery,” said Walt Doyle, CEO of WHERE, Inc. “We’re innovating at breakneck speed and will continue to leverage our proprietary technology to solve real world problems faced by millions of people everyday. There’s been tremendous excitement around location-based social networking and with Perfect Places, WHERE is delivering a truly social experience to users. We’re taking local recommendations to the next level and are well on our way to owning the pre check-in space.”

WHERE is also introducing a fun way for two users to find places they’ll both like, even if they’re not yet friends on WHERE. Users can now receive recommendations for Perfect Places simply by ‘bumping’ their phones together. To deliver this functionality to users, WHERE has partnered with Silicon Valley-based mobile startup, Bump Technologies. It’s a fun way to break the ice and an incredible time-saver. Bumping through WHERE comes in handy anytime, whether you’re out with friends or want to figure out where to go with someone you just met.

“We’ve all been part of the endless back and forth with friends trying to pick someplace to go,” said Nataly Kogan, VP of Consumer Experience. “With Perfect Places, we’re helping our users get to a place they’ll love faster and eliminating headaches along the way. WHERE is encouraging people to get out into the world, go places, and bring friends.”

Perfect Places is currently available for the latest version of WHERE on iPhone and Android, and www.where.com. Releases on other major platforms are expected within the month.

Towards a Global Licensing Framework for Geospatial Data

Is it time for a global licensing framework for geospatial data? The GSDI Legal and Economic Working group thinks so and offered a presentation and a way forward at the GSDI 13 conference held in Quebec City in May. The effort aims to harmonize existing licensing without changing fundamental access policies and funding models and be compatible with the diferences in national legal systems. That's a tall order, but an important one as the world moves toward geodata sharing. Geoff Zeiss reports.
