Hewlett-Packard (HP) released a new workstation designed with the GIS professional in mind. The combination of price and performance make it an attractive upgrade for users who require better than average bandwidth and fast graphics. According to HP, the HP xw4100 Workstation uses the new Intel 875P high-performance chipset and it includes Intel Performance Acceleration Technology for enhanced system performance due to reduced memory access latencies.

“We are very excited about this product, not only because of the new Intel technology that has gone into this box but also the HP technology that has gone in as well. The new chip set is the Intel 875P, which is a step up from the 533 Mhz front side bus of today up to an 800 MHz front side bus and the Double Data Rate (DDR) 400 memory. These two things together offer absolutely tremendous memory bandwidth on the system,” said Josh Peterson, HP Product Manager. “The DDR 400 memory bandwidth is about 6.4 gigabytes per second because it is a dual channel memory. No longer is memory a bottleneck with this system architecture.”

Other features include the choice of NVIDIA graphics cards, with the higher-end cards capable of delivering OpenGL and/or multi-display options. The convertible mini-tower design allows for both “deskside” and desktop configuration and the “tool-less” chasis provides for easy maintenance or upgrade possibilities.

The HP xw4100 supports Microsoft® Windows® 2000 Professional and Windows XP Professional and Red Hat Linux will be available in June. The suggested retail price starts at $799 and more information can be found at http://www.hp.com/go/workstations.
