Learning Open Web Mapping from Start to Finish

Just the facts

Many GIS software professionals are interested in putting their maps online using free and open source software, but don’t know where to start. The array of available open source products can be overwhelming and the documentation fragmented, making it a challenge to integrate data, servers and clients into an efficient Web mapping architecture. Penn State University has created an online course called Open Web Mapping which covers the theory and architecture of Web mapping. The course guides students through the process of taking their raw spatial data and turning it into an interactive Web map.

In this webinar you will learn about

  • free, open source software available for Web mapping
  • transforming raw data into interactive Web maps
  • free online access to Penn State’s Open Web Mapping lesson materials and open source Web mapping software

More details

Lessons in Penn State’s Open Web Mapping course offer detailed tutorials of popular open source GIS software such as QGIS, GDAL, GeoServer, TileMill, and OpenLayers. This course is intended as an open resource for the GIS community, therefore the lessons are freely visible online through a Creative Commons license.
