Setting Indian GIS ecosystem on growth path

This webinar has ended. A recording will be made available shortly—please check back.
Systematic mapping in India is almost 250 years old. Modern Remote Sensing and GIS forays in India is just in last 35 years. Serious GIS based applications and services concept is just about 15 years old. In all these forays, India has not lagged behind in acquiring state-of-art RS and GIS technology – in forms of best satellite images (both Indian and foreign), best GIS software (most commercial foreign), positioning variety of GIS applications and services (mostly in project-mode; some openings in private sector have started) and developing the first generation of GIS cadre in the country.

In fact, compared to many nations, India was an early mover in this field. But, when we NOW look at ourselves - we seem to lagging behind. What lacks our GIS eco-system and what ails it? What are the 1st generation of GIS cadre and experts leaving behind for the next generation? Our geospatial eco-system in India is not vibrant like banking, telecom, IT etc – WHY? Look at telecom, banking and other sectors – they too modernized in past 30-40 years but they have made far-impacting progress and growth for enterprises and citizens and national capability.

WHAT STEPS ARE NEEDED TO SET THE GIS ECO-SYSTEM ON A GROWTH PATH? A growth that must serve two important needs – build high-quality national capability in GIS and enable India to play a leading role in the GIS global arena. This must be a strategic effort of aligning government agencies, industries and academia INTO A COMMON PATH OF GROWTH? Is this possible, and if Yes, WHAT NEEDS TO BE DONE.

This webinars intends to DISCUSS THIS IN A  FOCUSSED MANNER, Four renowned experts of India will lead the discussions and take queries and issues from participants – who would be from government, industry professionals and academia experts. Thus, this sharing of views will enable address the core issues and hopefully trigger a debate to identify bridging-gaps in the GIS eco-system.
