Specifications and Quality Control for Airborne LiDAR Survey

The coming years are going to witness a multifold increase in airborne LiDAR data capture in India and sub-continent, as these data are highly useful for infrastructure projects and disaster management. However, in view of non-availability of any LiDAR data standards in India, and in this part of the world in general, any project involving LiDAR may result in confusion and uncertainty among clients and vendors collecting data.  There are a few attempts to develop these standards around the world but still the universally agreeable or applicable standards are missing.

This talk will focus on the current work being done by the presenter under the umbrella of Department of Science and Technology in India to arrive at a set of standards for LiDAR data capture and processing. The talk will cover the need of such standards, status of standards internationally and nationally, standards for pre, during and post-flight activities including the standards for quality control and data processing. The talk will be directly useful for the users who are planning to publish tenders for LiDAR data capture and to vendors who plan to procure data, as both parties should be on the same page for successful execution of the project. Availability of such standards also pave the way for generation of a national DEM, where LiDAR data of a minimum acceptable quality are warranted.
