Survey of India (SoI) is the national survey and mapping organization of the country under the Department of Science & Technology. It was set up in 1767, and is the oldest scientific department of the Government of India. 
 
In its assigned role as the nation's Principal Mapping Agency, SoI bears responsibility to:
  • ensure that the country's domain is explored and mapped suitably
  • provide base maps for expeditious and integrated development
  • ensure that all resources contribute with their full measure to the progress, prosperity and security of the country
Dr. Swarna Subba Rao has served as Surveyor General of India since 2010. During his professional career at Survey of India he has handled several projects involving topographical surveys, fair mapping, photogrammetric surveys, digital cartography and GIS related activities.
