Long Island Index mapping site
04 November, 2008

Category: Retail

Industry:  Internet/Web Mapping/Web Services

Brief Description: The Long Island Index mapping website combines a rich amount of information coupled with easy-to-use tools to visualize relationships across several types of data at local and regional scales. It supplements and enhances the work of the Long Island Index (www.longislandindex.org) to develop and monitor regional community indicators. The site displays Long Island's latest land use patterns on a property-by-property basis, detailed population and housing statistics from the Census Bureau, downtown survey data from the Index, special districts, transportation routes, current satellite imagery, and more. Gathering information from federal, state, and county resources, the mapping tools allow you to define which data elements you want to see in relation to each other. The site is in "beta" testing phase so users need to register (a one-time, temporary thing), and feedback is welcome.

Client-side technologies: HTML, JavaScript (ext.js), OpenLayers

Server-side technologies: .NET

Server-side applications: ArcGIS Server, Microsoft Virtual Earth API

Database technology:  ArcSDE, SQL Server

Commercial GIS Software used: ESRI ArcGIS Desktop and ArcGIS Server

Application areas: Community planning and monitoring regional indicators

Original work produced: No single component of the site is new but the integration of multiple tools is powerful. The maps leverage the combination of ESRI on the backend, OpenLayers for map navigation, and the ext.js framework for the GUI. The site includes the ability to access Microsoft's bird's eye views based on a click on the map, and we also implemented the ext.js transparency tool to make it easy to compare multiple thematic layers and aerial imagery.

Time invested in development: Several months
