Web GIS Tutorial: WiGLE
12 July, 2008

Category: Retail

Industry:  Retail, Wireless / Navigation, Business GIS, Geographic Data, Database, Software Development, GIS Software Products, Spatial Data Standards, Internet/Web Mapping/Web Services, Interoperability and Data Integration, Open Source GIS, Location Technology, Geospatial Technology, Programming Languages, Wi-Fi, LBS Software Platforms & Tools

Brief Description: This tutorial describes in detail the process of creating a Web GIS application. For this project we used a NAVTEQ map of Chicago as a base map and WiGLE data for GIS analysis. WiGLE is an acronym for “Wireless Geographic Logging Engine”. This interesting project has the purpose of cataloging wireless networks across the world. Location of wireless network is calculated by triangulation using GPS traces that are submitted by users. The interesting feature of their service is the ability to query the database and get detailed data about wireless networks. We used this service to get the data for the purpose of this project.

Client-side technologies: HTML, JavaScript, flashNavigator

Server-side technologies: PHP

Server-side applications: flashNavigator

Database technology:  PostgreSQL + PostGIS

Application areas: WebGIS, GIS, Technology integration

Original work produced: By integrating GIS server side technologies with interactive Adobe Flash based technology we got powerful tool that can do real-time database geospatial queries and display results on top of a base map. Project can be live tested at: http://www.flashnavigator.net/wigle/
