Editor’s note: Thank you for joining us for the first podcast edition of GeoInspirations. Today our distinguished columnist, Dr. Joseph Kerski, talks with Allen Carroll, program manager for storytelling at Esri.

Allen Carroll is program manager for storytelling at Esri. He founded the Esri story maps product and program. This work includes a development group that created and maintains the platform that enables people to create multimedia interactive maps, and an editorial team that creates stories using these multimedia tools, often in collaboration with other organizations. Allen worked for 27 years at National Geographic, including an influential role as Chief Cartographer, where he created a number of influential atlases, maps, and more.  I remember the day when it was announced that Allen was joining Esri, and our entire education team was absolutely thrilled. The occasional times when I have had the opportunity to teach with Allen are some of my favorite career memories. Thanks to Allen and his team, people around the world have access to telling rich and varied stories with powerful yet easy to use web based GIS tools. He has a very interesting pathway but one has always been focused on writing, designing, graphics, and mapping. It is my sincere pleasure to introduce Allen Carroll to the readers of Directions Magazine
