Sharing is Caring

The Pacific Southwest Region of the American Society for Photogrammetry and Remote Sensing announces its 1st annual symposium on remote sensing and wildland fire (RS Fire 2020). This is a virtual 4-date symposium series, and each date of the series includes three industry-leading speakers during the first hour and a second hour with panel discussion, Q&A, and networking opportunities. The dates of each RS Fire 2020 symposium are listed below, and additional information (including speaker list) is available at www.pswasprs.org/RSFire2020.

RS Fire 2020 Symposium Dates & Times (all Pacific time zone):

Monday, Nov 2, 2-4 PM

Monday, Nov 9, 2-4 PM

Monday, Nov 16, 2-4 PM

Monday, Nov 23, 2-4 PM

Trends have shown that wildland fire seasons are growing longer and fires are continuing to increase in total area and size. Simultaneously, remote sensing technologies continue to advance and are being used more and more to aid emergency responders. The Pacific Southwest (PSW) region of the American Society for Photogrammetry and Remote Sensing (ASPRS) invites you to participate in its first series that aims to explore the myriad ways that remote sensing can support wildfire preparedness, active incidents, and future management.

The intended audience for the RS Fire 2020 symposium series includes: 1) wildland firefighting community; 2) remote sensing & research community; 3) public and private environmental and forestry businesses; 4) utility companies and agencies; and 5) educators and champions to share the benefits and uses of remote sensing and geospatial technologies.

The intended outcomes of the event are to: 1) bring the remote sensing and wildland fire communities together; 2) discuss current operational wildland firefighting tactics and related remote sensing technologies, including existing workflows, incremental improvements, and leading-edge research and technologies; 3) better educate community members regarding available remote sensing data sources, offerings, and capabilities; and 4) enable discussions that lead to the creation of more usable remote sensing products for use before, during, and after wildfires, through networking opportunities, panel discussions, and brokered discussions.

The cost for general admission to the RS Fire 2020 symposium is $25. All students may attend the symposium for free. Students who register and pay the $25 admission fee for the RS Fire 2020 symposium will be offered a free one-year student membership to the ASPRS ($50 value). All Registrants will be given post-event access to recordings of all symposium presentations, panel discussions, and Q&A sessions. In addition, a total of four Professional Development Hours (PDH) will be provided to all symposium registrants. The virtual meeting is limited to the first 500 registered attendees, so please register early.

Sponsor opportunities are available, and detailed information will soon be posted on www.pswasprs.org/RSFire2020. All registration and sponsorship proceeds from the symposium will fund ASPRS student scholarships, awarded annually in the spring.
