Cesium for O3DE unlocks global 3D data and geospatial technology for O3DE, the open source real-time 3D engine

February 16, 2022 - PHILADELPHIA - The first stable release of Cesium for O3DE is now available free and open source. The gem will enable 3D geospatial capabilities and 3D Tiles streaming for Open 3D Engine (“O3DE”).

The successor to Amazon’s Lumberyard, O3DE is an open source, real-time 3D engine designed to power 3D experiences, games, and simulations supported by The Linux Foundation.

"We’re so proud of our growing community and partners around the Open 3D Engine,” said Royal O’Brien, GM of Digital Media and Games, Linux Foundation and O3DE. “Having integrated 3D geospatial capabilities and data into the Open 3D Engine creates new opportunities for everyone to build more immersive experiences, enriching the project even further."

Cesium for O3DE enables a full-scale, high-accuracy WGS84 globe for O3DE, allowing developers to create rich, global simulations and experiences. It also includes a runtime 3D Tiles engine to stream massive 3D geospatial datasets including global terrain, imagery, 3D buildings, and photogrammetry from the cloud, private network, or local machine.

Cesium for O3DE is built with Cesium Native, a single, engine-agnostic, reusable layer for 3D Tiles and 3D geospatial use cases in the metaverse. It is the second runtime engine integration of Cesium Native following the release of Cesium for Unreal, the free, open source plugin for Epic Games’ Unreal Engine, last March.

Using Cesium Native means that all the features in Cesium for Unreal are also reusable for O3DE, including support for 3D Tiles Next, physics, collisions, and characters creators can use to build their environments and applications.

“We’re excited that an open source engine is the second in a long line of 3D geospatial integrations built with Cesium Native,’ said Shehzan Mohammed, Director of 3D Engineering & Ecosystems at Cesium. “We look forward to enabling Cesium and 3D Tiles in even more game engines as we continue working to build an open metaverse.”

Cesium for O3DE includes integration with Cesium ion for optional commercial access to curated 3D content like global terrain, 3D buildings, photogrammetry, and satellite imagery, and software to convert custom high-resolution 3D data into streamable 3D Tiles.
