Esri and UNOSAT Host GIS for a Sustainable World Conference

NGOs, International Organizations, and the Private Sector Gather to Explore How Location Intelligence Can Help Solve the Challenges of Sustainable Development

Redlands, California—April 5, 2018—Esri, the global leader in spatial analytics, and the United Nations Institute for Training and Research's (UNITAR) Operational Satellite Applications Programme (UNOSAT) will host the 2018 GIS for a Sustainable World conference from April 17 through 19 in Geneva, Switzerland.

The conference will showcase the ways nongovernmental organizations (NGOs), international organizations, and, for the first time, the private sector are using GIS technology to find sustainability solutions and improve the lives of the most vulnerable. Esri staff will be on hand to inform attendees about how these organizations can leverage GIS to make sustainable development goals a reality by working to end poverty and inequality and address climate change, thus improving health and the quality of life. The theme of the conference this year is People, Planet, Prosperity, and Peace.

WHO: 

The conference will commence with talks by the following:

  • Patty Mims, Deputy Director for National Government, Nonprofits, and Global Organizations, Esri
  • Einar Bjorgo, Manager, UNOSAT, United Nations Institute for Training and Research
  • Ambassador Stefano Toscano, Director, Geneva International Centre for Humanitarian Demining
  • Nikki Paripovich-Stifle, GIS Manager, Kohler Company
  • Chahine Hamze, IT Manager, and Kassem Chaalan, Disaster Risk Reduction Program Manager, Lebanese Red Cross

WHAT: 

After an opening session, participants will get to experience the following talks and sessions:

  • Peer-to-peer sessions on best practices for implementing GIS
  • Applied GIS Lightning Talks on the conference theme of People, Planet, Prosperity, and Peace
  • Achieving sustainable business practices with GIS
  • Geneva leadership forum
