Canadian gold producer improves global data management with spatial technology share

SUDBURY, Esri Canada User Conference—May 9, 2018– Alamos Gold today received Esri Canada’s Award of Excellence for improving their mineral data management using geographic information system (GIS) technology. The Geo-Information Group, working under the umbrella of the Exploration department, manages all mineral datasets worldwide, with advanced exploration projects in North America and Turkey. These sites transitioned from collecting data in various formats and managing it in different silos to deploying Esri’s cloud-based mapping platform, ArcGIS Online. This has provided a single and consistent data management model for all their offices, as well as new capabilities for data-sharing, analysis and collaboration.

For the past four years, Alamos Gold has pursued an enterprise approach to managing all the exploration data that is collected at their projects worldwide. With the implementation of ArcGIS Online in Toronto as their central data hub, employees at global exploration sites have gained the ability to access all information from a centralized platform. As a result, everyone – from field staff to senior management – are now able to use consistent data immediately through various web maps and mobile applications developed using ArcGIS Online.

“ArcGIS Online has become an indispensable system to our company. It has allowed us to not only better manage and share our data, but has also created a single gateway to access other systems,” notes Fernando Lopez, director, Geo-Information & Analytics, Alamos Gold. “For example, we now can access non-spatial data, such as reports and core photos from within ArcGIS Online. Connecting people to connected data has become our philosophy.”

Their standardized data management initiative provides several benefits to the company:

Data is significantly more consistent and easily accessed across the organization.

Senior management is more connected to the spatial information than ever before.

Management has increased confidence in the information being presented to make crucial decisions.

“Many businesses with global operations such as mining companies struggle with how to manage and share their data effectively and make it useful to everyone in their organization,” says Alex Miller, president, Esri Canada. “Alamos Gold’s decision to make ArcGIS Online their central data repository has increased their productivity, facilitated better project management across different time zones and opened new avenues for increasing revenues. This has positioned them to become more successful in meeting their business goals.”
