Sharing is Caring

San Marcos, Texas – May 30, 2018

With skill, passion, and analysis, high school and middle school students explored their world and created interesting map products with ArcGIS Online by Esri. Esri challenged US students to create and share maps about something in their home states, striving to be among the best in the school, state, and nation. Esri's 2018 ArcGIS Online US School Competition was open to high school ("HS," gr.9-12) and middle school ("MS," gr.4-8) students in the US who can analyze, interpret, and present data via an ArcGIS Online web app or story map. Esri provided prize money for up to 10 winning student projects in each state. For the second year, the Texas Alliance for Geographic Education in the Department of Geography at Texas State University and GISetc, a K-16 geospatial education provider, coordinated Texas’ participation in this competition, with the theme “Texas Water.”

We are impressed with the quality of work from the submissions and appreciate the time that the teachers and students dedicated to this competition. We also thank the many mentors and judges who volunteered their time and their love of geography and GIS to provide feedback on the students’ entries. This competition is a great opportunity for Texas students to get recognition and a little bit of prize money for outstanding work in the field of geography and geospatial technology, opening students’ eyes to many college and career options.
