Siemens Selected to Deliver Next-Generation GIS Platform for NATO

Siemens Communications, Inc. announced that its Enterprise Communications division in Belgium has been chosen to lead a large-scale project to implement a new Geographical Information System (GIS) for NATO. The initiative is designed to modernize how geospatial intelligence is accessed, integrated, and used across NATO operations.
The new GIS platform will ensure that NATO personnel have continuous access to accurate and up-to-date geospatial information. Beyond mapping, the system will allow spatial data to be combined with other critical information sources, such as logistics and operational datasets, creating a more comprehensive view of ongoing activities.
A service-oriented architecture (SOA) will serve as the technical foundation of the solution. This approach enables data from multiple systems to be fused efficiently, supporting the creation of a shared and consistent operational picture for decision-makers.
Technology Integration and Project Scope
Siemens will oversee overall project management and system integration. The solution brings together several key technologies, including industry-leading GIS software from ESRI, enterprise database technology from Oracle, and a broad range of IT infrastructure components. These include servers, workstations, backup and storage systems, networking equipment, as well as scanning, printing, and large-format plotting devices.
By integrating software, hardware, and data management technologies into a unified platform, the project aims to deliver a robust and scalable geospatial environment tailored to NATO’s operational requirements.
Strategic Significance for Siemens
This initiative highlights Siemens Enterprise Communications’ strategic focus on complex system integration and advanced ICT services. Leading a mission-critical GIS deployment for NATO reinforces Siemens’ role as a trusted provider of large-scale, integrated information systems for governmental and defense organizations.
