Redwire to Supply Docking Technology for Europe’s Nyx Space Capsule

Redwire has secured a new contract to manufacture and supply docking hardware for Nyx, a next-generation European spacecraft designed for repeat missions and independent operations in orbit.
Under the terms of the agreement, the company will deliver two docking units built in accordance with the International Docking System Standard. These systems will be installed on Nyx, a spacecraft currently being developed to support Europe’s long-term strategy of expanding autonomous spaceflight capabilities.
The deal, estimated to be worth tens of millions of dollars, is centered on Redwire’s proprietary International Berthing and Docking Mechanism. The technology is intended to enable automated rendezvous, secure mechanical capture, and precision docking during future missions that require dependable in-space connectivity.
Enabling Next-Generation Orbital Missions
The docking solution is engineered to operate across standardized docking interfaces while supporting both assisted berthing and fully autonomous docking sequences. Its configurable design allows the system to be adapted for different mission scenarios, ranging from commercial payload delivery to institutional and exploration-related operations.
Company officials described the agreement as a meaningful contribution to Europe’s rapidly evolving commercial space landscape, noting that the system is built to meet strict safety requirements and demanding operational conditions.
Built on European Engineering Expertise
Development of the docking mechanism took place in Belgium, drawing on expertise from multiple international collaborators. Additional engineering contributions from Poland have helped optimize system reliability, performance consistency, and operational resilience.
Teams working on the Nyx hardware are also leveraging experience gained from prior orbital infrastructure programs, including work related to lunar systems. Knowledge from those efforts is expected to improve system robustness and reduce operational risk once the docking units are deployed in flight.
With this contract in place, Redwire strengthens its footprint within Europe’s aerospace manufacturing ecosystem, while Nyx advances toward becoming a core platform for autonomous European space missions.
