The MapGuide Open is a North American web mapping competition designed for developers working with MapGuide Open Source. Participants are invited to build and publish a fully functional website using the latest release of the platform and submit it for evaluation. Projects compete within three primary divisions: Business, Government, and Miscellaneous.

Contestants are encouraged to incorporate their own geospatial datasets into their applications. However, for those without proprietary spatial data, sample datasets are available. These include road networks and points of interest covering Washington, DC; Frankfurt, Germany; and Taipei, Taiwan. The provided data ensures that every developer has access to relevant mapping content needed to construct a compelling web application.

To build a submission, participants use Autodesk MapGuide Studio to import spatial data, configure map layers, apply styling, and publish an interactive web map. Beyond basic visualization, developers can embed custom business logic by leveraging the PHP, .NET, or Java APIs. This allows the creation of advanced, data-driven web mapping solutions tailored to real-world scenarios.

After completing the application, developers must formally submit their site within the designated entry period.

The contest is sponsored by Autodesk and hosted by Directions Magazine. The sample spatial datasets are supplied courtesy of NAVTEQ.

The competition officially begins on March 16. Entries are accepted from March 16 through May 31, 2006. During this timeframe, participants may finalize and submit their MapGuide Open Source web mapping projects.

Voting is open to all visitors of the contest website from June 1 through June 15, 2006. Projects are evaluated based on functionality, visual presentation, practical applicability, and originality. The submissions that receive the highest number of votes in each category will be declared winners. Results will be announced on June 20, 2006.

In each of the three contest categories—Business, Government, and Miscellaneous—three prizes will be awarded to the top-ranked entries. Additionally, three voters will be selected at random to receive one of the same prizes awarded to the winning participants.
