BERLIN, August 11, 2022 — UP42, a prominent geospatial developer platform and marketplace, has partnered with Trimble to deliver automated object-based image analysis and change detection powered by Trimble® eCognition®. The collaboration introduces advanced extraction technology into the UP42 cloud ecosystem, enabling developers to operationalize sophisticated geospatial analytics at scale.

Trimble eCognition is widely recognized for its object-based image analysis (OBIA) approach, which significantly improves the precision and reliability of information derived from spatial datasets. By incorporating this technology into the UP42 platform, developers gain the ability to transform raw Earth observation data into structured, high-quality geospatial intelligence. The integration also allows eCognition specialists to join the UP42 partner network, expand their processing capabilities and commercialize their analytical models through the UP42 marketplace.

The enhanced workflow supports a broad spectrum of industry use cases. Organizations can generate accurate outputs for forestry management, land cover and sustainability mapping, vegetation monitoring along utility transmission corridors and time-series change analysis. The object-based methodology improves classification and feature extraction performance, especially in complex or heterogeneous environments where pixel-based techniques may fall short.

Sean Wiid, CEO of UP42, described the collaboration as mutually beneficial for both ecosystems. He emphasized that UP42 partners can now harness eCognition’s object-based extraction framework to design automated solutions that deliver fully quantified insights from imagery. Once developed, these solutions can be deployed and scaled cost-effectively using UP42’s cloud-native infrastructure.

Wiid also highlighted the advantages for existing eCognition developers. Through UP42, they gain access to an extensive library of machine learning algorithms and a diverse catalog of geospatial datasets consolidated within a single environment. Flexible workflow orchestration enables seamless integration of data sources and analytics components. In addition to technical benefits, the marketplace model offers a new commercial pathway for developers to publish and monetize their geospatial products.

Tim Lemmon, Marketing Director for Trimble Geospatial, noted that embedding eCognition within the UP42 environment brings together scalable computing infrastructure, Earth observation data and automated extraction capabilities. This convergence accelerates the transition from raw data acquisition to actionable geospatial information, supporting faster and more reliable decision-making.
