The Faroese Environment Agency has officially joined EuroGeographics as an associate member, expanding the organization’s network of national mapping, cadastral, and land registration authorities across Europe. The membership application was approved during the association’s 2024 General Assembly, hosted by Spain’s National Geographic Institute with support from the General Directorate for the Cadastre. The meeting brought together 115 delegates representing 37 countries.

Dr. Sigurð í Jákupsstovu, Director General of the Faroese Environment Agency, noted that participation in earlier EuroGeographics activities, including the 2023 General Assembly and workshops addressing challenges faced by smaller national mapping authorities, demonstrated the advantages of membership. While the agency already engages in Nordic regional cooperation, joining EuroGeographics will broaden opportunities for collaboration at the European level and enable participation in cross-border geospatial initiatives.

EuroGeographics Secretary General and Executive Director Sallie Payne Snell welcomed the new member, emphasizing the organization’s mission to support trusted national providers of geospatial information that underpin essential services and daily activities throughout Europe. She highlighted the association’s strength in fostering cooperation across national boundaries and expressed confidence that the Faroese Environment Agency’s expertise will contribute to expanding shared access to authoritative geographic data for public benefit.

The Faroese Environment Agency oversees the Faroe Islands’ national mapping programs, including land mapping and hydrographic surveying, and serves as the country’s official authority for cadastral and land registration functions. Its participation in EuroGeographics is expected to strengthen knowledge exchange and collaborative development of geospatial infrastructure across the region.
