Bluesky 3D Model Brings Huddersfield’s £250m Masterplan to Life

A high-resolution 3D computer model developed by Bluesky International is playing a central role in communicating a £250 million redevelopment vision for Huddersfield town centre in the United Kingdom. Built from the latest nationwide aerial photography coverage, the model provides the digital foundation for a detailed visualisation produced by AECOM on behalf of Kirklees Council.
The 3D model underpins immersive fly-through sequences and realistic animated presentations designed to present the long-term regeneration strategy to residents, investors, and stakeholders. These visualisations will form part of an online engagement platform intended to support public consultation over the coming months.
Visualising the Huddersfield Blueprint
Working closely with Kirklees Council, AECOM developed a ten-year masterplan known as the Huddersfield Blueprint. The strategy identifies targeted redevelopment initiatives across six key zones within the town centre.
Among the focal areas are the surroundings of the train and bus stations, St Peter’s Gardens, Kingsgate, King Street, and New Street. A significant element of the plan includes the creation of a “Cultural Heart” between the town’s library and university. This initiative involves the demolition of the Piazza shopping centre, recently acquired by the Council, to make way for new civic and cultural infrastructure.
According to Becky Mather, Regional Design Director at AECOM, the Bluesky model provided a precise and current base layer that enabled the design team to build a compelling and accurate visual narrative. By leveraging detailed aerial-derived 3D data, the project team produced a high-impact representation intended to illustrate the transformation clearly and convincingly.
Community Engagement Through Digital Presentation
The masterplan was officially introduced at a launch event attended by more than 300 participants, including business leaders, councillors, developers, and other stakeholders. Council representatives and former Iceland chief executive Bill Grimsey delivered presentations outlining the vision and long-term objectives.
The visualisation generated by AECOM, incorporating Bluesky’s 3D model, received strong audience approval. Following the event, Grimsey praised the proposal, describing it as among the most impressive redevelopment strategies he had encountered over the course of the year.
By combining advanced 3D geospatial modelling with animated urban design concepts, the project team aims to ensure that complex planning proposals are accessible and understandable to the broader community.
Integrated Infrastructure and Urban Design Expertise
AECOM operates as a fully integrated infrastructure consultancy, bringing together architects, engineers, planners, scientists, and construction specialists across the project lifecycle. Urban design forms a core element of its built environment services, supporting both public sector and private sector clients throughout the UK and internationally.
The Huddersfield Blueprint exemplifies how detailed aerial mapping and 3D geospatial modelling can enhance large-scale urban regeneration initiatives. Through realistic digital representation, stakeholders are better equipped to evaluate proposals, visualize long-term change, and participate in shaping the future of their town centre.
