On Wednesday, 20 November, Brisbane joined the global celebration of International GIS Day 2013 with a large public open day highlighting the latest advancements in geospatial technology. The event transformed the city into a vibrant hub for spatial innovation, drawing widespread participation from across the community.

Organized by GIS People, the showcase featured nearly 30 exhibitors presenting practical applications of Geographic Information Systems (GIS). More than 2,000 attendees explored the displays, including members of the public, students from local schools, and representatives from small and medium-sized businesses.

Demonstrating Real-World Geospatial Innovation

The exhibition floor presented a diverse range of spatial technologies and interactive demonstrations. Brisbane City Council unveiled an immersive 3D digital model of Brisbane, offering visitors a detailed visualization of the city’s built environment. Disaster management mapping systems illustrated how spatial analysis supports emergency response and resilience planning.

Attendees also encountered live demonstrations of unmanned aerial vehicles, advanced 3D laser scanning systems, and the Queensland Government’s pioneering Queensland Globe platform. Together, these technologies showcased how GIS tools are transforming urban planning, infrastructure management, environmental monitoring, and public safety.

School groups were given additional inspiration through a presentation by Dr Timothy Foresman, an internationally recognized spatial scientist and keynote speaker. His address underscored the growing influence of geospatial science in shaping future careers and technological development.

Broad Industry Support and Community Engagement

Igor Stjepanovic, Managing Director of GIS People, described the day as a strong demonstration of the practical value GIS delivers across government, industry, education, and the broader community. The scale of attendance reflected increasing public awareness of how spatial technologies impact everyday life.

The event received sponsorship from Esri Australia, Dialog Google Enterprise, and AAM, along with support from numerous volunteers and partner organizations.

Brisbane’s International GIS Day celebration illustrated the expanding role of geospatial innovation in modern society—demonstrating how mapping, spatial analytics, and emerging technologies continue to redefine how communities understand and interact with the world around them.
