The global geospatial community is set to witness one of its most significant assemblies as the European INSPIRE conference and the Geospatial World Forum join forces for a unified 2015 event. The collaboration was officially announced during INSPIRE Conference 2014 held in Aalborg, Denmark.

Bridging European Policy and Global Geospatial Dialogue

The annual INSPIRE conference provides a central platform for stakeholders from government institutions, academia, and industry to examine the progress of the INSPIRE Directive and the development of national Spatial Data Infrastructures (SDIs). It serves as a venue for discussing regulatory frameworks, data harmonization, and cross-border information exchange within Europe.

Geospatial World Forum, in contrast, has built its reputation on high-level global discussions that connect professionals across diverse sectors. The forum showcases international case studies, emerging technologies, and innovative geospatial applications spanning infrastructure, environment, governance, and industry.

Hugo De Groof of the Directorate-General for Environment, Governance, Information & Reporting Unit at the European Commission emphasized that the joint 2015 conference would provide a stage for stakeholders, governments, and businesses to explore synergies between rapidly converging geospatial technologies and institutional, legal, and governance frameworks.

Convergence Through Public-Private Partnership

Sanjay Kumar, CEO of Geospatial Media and Communications—the organizer of Geospatial World Forum—highlighted the partnership’s broader ambition: to demonstrate how geospatial policies, operational practices, and human collaboration can align to enhance living standards. By bringing together public institutions and private enterprises, the event aims to strengthen the case for Public-Private Partnerships (PPPs) and position geospatial workflows as essential tools for informed decision-making.

The 2015 conference will revolve around the theme: CONVERGENCE: Policies + Practices + People via PPP. The objective is to foster deeper coordination among policymakers, technology providers, and end users, while emphasizing geospatial systems as enablers of effective governance and collaborative development.

Strategic Planning Underway

Preparations for the joint event are already advancing. The first Programme Advisory Board meeting was conducted in Aalborg, chaired by Hugo De Groof and attended by 15 board members representing policy authorities, industry experts, academics, and user communities.

INSPIRE and Geospatial World Forum 2015 is scheduled for 24–29 May 2015 in Lisbon, Portugal, in cooperation with the Directorate General of Territorial Development of Portugal as the local host.

By uniting European spatial data infrastructure leadership with a global geospatial platform, the 2015 conference promises to deliver an integrated dialogue on policy alignment, technological innovation, and collaborative governance at an unprecedented scale.
