In September 2012, Nokia announced that its Location & Commerce division would provide global NAVTEQ® Maps and associated content for navigation systems across the entire Mercedes-Benz A-Class lineup. The integration equips drivers with enhanced routing capabilities supported by visual 3D mapping, real-time traffic intelligence, driver notifications, and posted speed limit information.

Enhanced Visual Navigation and Lane Guidance

The navigation experience within the A-Class range incorporates advanced visual tools such as 3D City Models and detailed 3D Landmarks. These features assist motorists in orienting themselves within unfamiliar urban environments.

Extended Lanes functionality further refines route guidance by clearly indicating the correct lane position at complicated intersections and highway interchanges. This combination of graphical clarity and precise routing data is designed to improve driver confidence and reduce navigation errors.

Multiple System Options Powered by NAVTEQ Data

Mercedes customers can select from three navigation configurations: a premium high-end system, an entry-level solution, and a mobile-based version. Each platform relies on NAVTEQ® Map data, a widely deployed mapping resource utilized more than 100 million times daily across devices, applications, and services worldwide.

The dataset supports over 24 million in-vehicle navigation systems spanning both personal and commercial fleets. As a foundational element of the Nokia Location Platform, NAVTEQ content underpins a broad ecosystem of automotive and mobile location services.

Longstanding Collaboration in Automotive Navigation

According to Bruno Bourguet, Senior Vice President of Sales and Business Development for Nokia Location & Commerce, the partnership between Nokia and Mercedes dates back to the mid-1990s. Over time, the collaboration has evolved through continuous innovation in mapping content and location-based services tailored to automotive requirements.

The integration within the A-Class portfolio reflects Nokia’s established presence in the automotive sector, where it delivers core navigation solutions to leading vehicle manufacturers worldwide.

Showcasing Connected Vehicle Solutions

Nokia presented its automotive location technologies at the Mondial de l'Automobile in Paris, exhibiting in Hall 3, booth #213. The company highlighted how its mapping infrastructure supports the expectations of today’s connected driver—enabling seamless transitions between home, pedestrian, and in-vehicle navigation environments.

Through collaborations with original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) and strategic partners, Nokia’s Location & Commerce business demonstrates its capability to provide integrated, multi-screen and multi-modal location services. These solutions aim to deliver smarter data utilization and fluid connectivity across platforms, aligning with the evolving demands of modern automotive consumers.
