Peoples Natural Gas Modernizes Its Technology Stack with Esri Solutions

Peoples Natural Gas (PNG) is advancing its digital transformation strategy by adopting a unified enterprise mapping platform to streamline utility services across Pennsylvania, West Virginia, and Kentucky. Through an enterprise license agreement with Esri, the utility provider is consolidating mapping technologies from multiple acquired companies into a single ArcGIS-based system.
Integrating Legacy Systems into One Platform
Following the acquisitions of Equitable Gas and T.W. Philips, PNG faced the challenge of managing multiple legacy systems that operated independently. By standardizing on the ArcGIS platform, the organization will integrate data, workflows, and operational tools into a single enterprise environment, enabling consistent processes across the combined utility network.
The unified system is designed to allow all field and operational teams to function as one coordinated workforce, reducing inefficiencies associated with fragmented systems and improving organizational alignment.
Real-Time Asset and Workforce Visibility
Once fully deployed, the ArcGIS integration will enable near real-time spatial tracking of infrastructure assets and field crews. This improved situational awareness will support faster deployment of maintenance teams, more efficient inspection scheduling, and quicker response to service issues.
The platform will also strengthen decision-making by providing centralized access to accurate spatial data, helping PNG optimize resource allocation and operational planning.
Enhancing Mobile and Field Capabilities
A major benefit of the new system is enhanced mobile functionality for field workers. Crews will be able to submit updates related to inspections, repairs, and maintenance activities directly from the field, ensuring that operational data is synchronized with central systems in real time. This capability improves communication between field teams and office personnel while increasing the accuracy and timeliness of operational records.
Supporting Long-Term Utility Modernization
Standardizing on a modern enterprise GIS platform positions Peoples Natural Gas for long-term operational improvements. Consolidated systems simplify data management, reduce maintenance costs, and provide a scalable foundation for future technology upgrades and service enhancements.
By integrating its utility operations through ArcGIS, PNG is taking a significant step toward delivering more efficient services, faster response times, and improved reliability for the approximately 700,000 homes and businesses it serves.
