Following the recent G7 summit, member nations endorsed a shared commitment to protecting marine ecosystems and strengthening coastal resilience through the Charlevoix Blueprint for Healthy Oceans, Seas and Resilient Coastal Communities. The United Kingdom, supported by the expertise of the UK Hydrographic Office (UKHO), is preparing to play a leading role in implementing the initiative’s ocean science, sustainability, and data-sharing goals.

Marine geospatial information forms the backbone of effective maritime decision-making, enabling safer navigation, environmental protection, infrastructure planning, and sustainable use of marine resources. With long-standing experience in hydrographic surveying, seabed mapping, and ocean data management, the UKHO is positioned to support global efforts aimed at improving the quality, accessibility, and integration of ocean information.

Expanding Global Ocean Data and Mapping Initiatives

The UKHO is currently engaged in multiple international programs designed to strengthen coastal management, improve disaster preparedness, and expand seabed mapping coverage. These initiatives include projects across dozens of coastal states, focusing on improving marine data availability, supporting fisheries management, and enhancing the protection of marine ecosystems.

One major effort involves seabed mapping activities across UK Overseas Territories, helping governments better understand marine environments and plan sustainable economic activities. In parallel, collaborative programs with scientific and environmental organizations are supporting small island developing states by providing geospatial insights that contribute to economic development, coastal protection, and marine resource management.

Key Commitments Under the G7 Healthy Oceans Blueprint

The Charlevoix Blueprint outlines several priority actions intended to strengthen global ocean governance and sustainability. These include:

  • Enhancing emergency preparedness, climate adaptation, and disaster recovery planning
  • Supporting innovative financing mechanisms for coastal resilience
  • Expanding Earth observation technologies for coastal zone monitoring
  • Increasing international sharing of ocean science data
  • Addressing illegal and unsustainable fishing practices
  • Protecting vulnerable marine ecosystems and habitats
  • Promoting sustainable lifecycle management of plastics

Strengthening the Blue Economy Through Marine Geospatial Expertise

Hydrographic data and marine geospatial analytics play a critical role in enabling the sustainable “Blue Economy,” helping nations balance economic growth with environmental stewardship. Accurate seabed mapping and ocean intelligence support activities ranging from maritime safety and offshore infrastructure planning to biodiversity protection and fisheries management.

By continuing to invest in advanced data science capabilities, geospatial technologies, and international partnerships, the UK Hydrographic Office aims to contribute significantly to the global implementation of the G7 Healthy Oceans commitments. These efforts are expected to strengthen coastal resilience worldwide while supporting long-term environmental sustainability and economic development.
