A Comprehensive Programme in Geographic Information

London, UK — The MGI course delivers advanced education in Geographic Information (GI) and Geographic Information Systems (GIS), positioning GI as a business, scientific, and professional resource. Designed for individuals seeking to strengthen both practical capability and theoretical understanding, the programme addresses emerging issues shaping the next generation of geospatial technology.

Core themes include interoperability, intellectual property law, g-business models, information visualization, and location-based services supporting mobile commerce. By integrating these contemporary topics, the course prepares students to operate within an evolving GIS landscape that increasingly intersects with enterprise systems, digital markets, and Web-based infrastructures.

Internationally Recognized Faculty

Instruction is provided by a team of globally respected GI/GIS experts, including Joseph Wood, Jason Dykes, David Rhind, and Jonathan Raper. Collectively, the faculty have authored influential publications such as Spatial Programming with Java (2002), Geographic Information Systems and Science (2001), and Multidimensional GIS (2000).

Beyond academic contributions, the teaching team has developed widely used geospatial software tools including Landserf and panoraMap, reinforcing the programme’s strong connection between research innovation and applied GIS development.

Flexible Delivery: On-Campus and Distance Learning

Now entering its third successful year, the programme supports a cohort exceeding fifty students. Participants may enroll in a full-time, face-to-face format in London or pursue either full-time or part-time study through a globally delivered distance-learning option.

Distance learners access a dedicated Web-based virtual learning environment (VLE) that hosts course materials, discussion forums, and an online literature portal. This digital infrastructure enables remote engagement while maintaining structured academic support.

As part of the study package, students are eligible to purchase major GIS software at significantly reduced educational rates, supporting hands-on skill development alongside theoretical instruction.

Virtual Learning Access and Open Day Events

Prospective students can explore the VLE by registering interest through the programme website. Registration grants entry to mgiCentral, where visitors may review selected teaching materials, consult frequently asked questions, interact with staff, read student profiles, and obtain details regarding Open Day events.

An upcoming Open Day will be held on Wednesday, 31 July. Attendees may participate in person at 2:00 PM in London or join remotely via scheduled web chats at 09:00 or 17:00 British Summer Time through mgiCentral. Additional Open Days will be organized later in the summer.

Applications, Scholarships, and Entry Requirements

Applications for the 2002–2003 academic year are being accepted through 20 September 2002. Eligibility extends to candidates holding undergraduate degrees as well as individuals with relevant professional experience.

Two scholarships covering first-year fees for part-time distance students are available. These awards will be granted competitively to the most deserving applicants whose completed applications, including references, are submitted before the stated deadline.

The programme is directed by Jonathan Raper, and it has received endorsements from the UK Government’s university inspection agency, reflecting its academic credibility and professional standing within the GIS education sector.
